Wedding Favours...

We have been busy bees recently...

wedding season is in full swing and since the launch of our favour tins, there just don't seem to be enough hours in the day!

We were honoured to be asked by our favourite little wedding magazine 'Wedding Ideas' to be a guest blogger and write a piece for their blog, all about wedding favours! The lovely girls there have already been instrumental in drumming up business for our personalised favour tins but thought that this may be another way to increase the sales and awareness for them.

Never one to turn down a challenge, our creative director Caro, took up the gauntlet and wrote a piece all about the history of the wedding favour!

It's been slightly edited for the Wedding Ideas site, so here is our original unabridged version...

Origins of the wedding favour

Have you ever wondered where the custom of giving wedding favours originated from? Many modern brides probably don’t realise that this is not a recent development, but a tradition that began centuries ago!

The first wedding favours, known as ‘bonbonniére’, were given as exclusive gifts to the wedding guests of European aristocrats.

A bonbonniére was a small, ornate box —made out of silver, crystal or porcelain— often encrusted with precious stones. These beautiful vessels were then filled with cubes of sugar or other luxury confections.

In those days, sugar was such an expensive commodity, it was only afforded by royalty —or the very wealthy— but as the price of sugar decreased, the tradition of giving wedding favours was then embraced by brides and grooms from more humble origins.

Over time, the bonbonniéres began to contain almonds. For centuries, plain almonds were commonly given to female wedding guests to represent well-wishes for the couples new life, but in the thirteenth century, almonds coated with sugar —known as ‘confetti’— were introduced. The bitterness of the almond and the sweetness of the coated shell symbolised the bitter sweetness of marriage.

Confetti then evolved to sugared almonds, which is the tradition that most of us are familiar with today.  But did you know that, traditionally, five sugared almonds —presented in a box or bag— represented fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness?

Favours for modern day weddings have now evolved even further and, these days, anything goes! So whilst the tradition of giving wedding favours still continues —and is still very much part of today’s modern bridal etiquette— the symbolism of the gifts has changed, as most couples now choose to give wedding favours as a thank you, to their guests for sharing their special day.

How much should I spend?

There are so many options available to brides and grooms these days and modern wedding favours can really vary in price, according to your budget.

Wedding favours need not be expensive and money savvy brides can still purchase traditional bonbonniére or you can make your own, very simply, by filling organza bags with sugared almonds or sweets.

Couples with a little more to spend are spoilt for choice as you can buy everything, from miniature bird cages and photo-frames to bottles of your guest’s favourite tipple... the list goes on and on!

It is alleged that William and Kate gave each of their wedding guests a pair of cupcakes, boxed up with the couple’s official engagement photo!

Ultimately, when determining how much to spend on your wedding favours, you shouldn’t feel obliged to spend half of your budget on presents for your guests. Your friends and family will be attending your marriage to show their love and support for you both and really won’t expect a diamond encrusted gift.

Personalised favours

One of the nicest things about today’s modern favours is the option to tie them in with your wedding theme or even reflect your personal interests. There are even lots of companies who specialise in creating favours to match your wedding stationery! This is a great way of creating a harmonious look and feel for your big day - right from when your guest’s receive their invitation to when they take their seat, at the dinner table, and are presented with their ‘thank-you’ gift from you.

Couples who are musical could give their guests a CD of their best-loved songs and green fingered bride and grooms could give personalised seed packets; these are lovely and unique gifts, as they are a long lasting reminder of your special day.  You can purchase ‘Forget-Me-Not’ seed packet favours from Mooks Design, www.mooksdesign.co.uk; they are fully personalised, with the details of your wedding, and can also be recoloured to suit your theme.

However, if you prefer something a little more traditional, but with a modern twist, Mooks have just launched some gorgeous little favour tins; a nod to the very first ‘bonbonniére’. These little stainless steel tins are not encrusted with precious stones but, instead, beautifully adorned with a personalised label and jam-packed with sweets or heart shaped mints.

Once your guests have eaten the contents they’ll be left with a useful little tin, to keep their pins, stamps or other treasures safe and sound, which will also act as a lasting reminder of your marriage!

Finally, whichever route you go down, choose favours that are personal to you —and a lovely memento of your special day— and you won’t go far wrong!

Personalised favour tins!

Almost half a year has gone by since we last wrote in the Mooks blog... shame on us! : )

There's always so much going on that it's easier to just do stuff, than write about it!!! Still... it's always good to let our darling customers know about any special events or happenings that are taking place at Mooks HQ and this is such a time!

We are delighted to announce the launch of our new personalised wedding favours... adorable personalised favour tins!

The perfect keepsake for your guests, our little favour tins are personalised with a label that tie in with our contemporary wedding stationery ranges. Available in lots of colours and designs, these these dinky little tins contain a choice of tiny, chewy flavoured sweets, heart shaped mints... or you can purchase them empty and jam-pack them with your own choice of filling.

Once your guests have eaten the contents they’ll be left with a useful little tin, to keep their pins, stamps or other little treasures, safe and sound, which will also act as a lasting reminder of your big day!
We're so pleased to have added another item to our range. We spend such a long time designing new products that it's a real joy when they're finally launched!

Other news...

Mooks very own Belle got married at the beginning of this month!! Designing her wedding stationery was a privilege and a pleasure and we were all totally delighted with the end result! We've been dying to launch her stationery as a new range, but were told — in no uncertain terms — that we had to hold off until her wedding day had passed!!

Now that it's happened and she is a proppa grown up 'Mrs' (!) we're busy getting her stationery design ready to launch on the Mooks website.

Spring has sprung!

Once again time is whizzing by so quickly and we've not managed to post anything for ages!! Not sure where the time goes — or how we can manage to write the blog any more often — maybe we need a dedicated Mooks blogger... a Mooker perhaps?! Actually, perhaps not, that sounds a little rude?!

Things have been busy-busy in the Mooks office. We've been inundated with orders for this years weddings plus lots of new arrivals and Christenings, not to mention our partnership with Not On The High Street PLUS trying to design more stuff for Mooks Paperie : ) It's all go!

Contemporary wedding stationery is our passion and when we were asked to design some concepts for festival themed wedding invitations, we jumped at the chance!

We've already designed actual festival tickets — and other stationery — for our darling friend Bex who runs the fabulous festival Haselstockwww.haselstock.co.uk — but to mix this up with the wedding side of things is a joy and (we think) the end result is a triumph! We hope you agree.

Finally, whilst we remember... it's always lovely when we have emails from people saying how much they like our designs and we had a very sweet message back in March from Zoe, who's the editor, at the gorgeous blog Inspired Celebration!

She has created an eclectic collection of beautiful things... contemporary wedding stationery, gifts, things for the home, fashion... a real mix of loveliness!

Zoe had featured one of our Butterfly table number cards in her blog. Lovely to know that our designs are appreciated and showcased along with other designs! : )

Happy New Year!

New year again? Where, oh where, did the last new year go?! Seems just yesterday that we were gearing up for 2010 and in the blink of an eye it's gone and we're welcoming in 2011!! Note to self: must try and keep up this year ; )

So happy, happy new year to all our lovely clients, past present and future! 2011 is all set to be a cracking 12 months : ) We have another Mooks wedding to look forward to... our own, lovely Belle is getting hitched to Sam in September so there's a lot of excitement in the Mooks offices as we prepare for that!

We LOVE creating wedding stationery, at the best of times, but to be given free reign is very exciting!! Belle's wedding is going to be absolutely gorgeous... we've already created (and sent out) the save-the-date cards and we're looking forward to designing the rest!

Have a look... we hope you like.

A very happy January everyone! Wishing you the very best of everything this year.

Love from the team at Mooks x

Hot Pink Damask

Just wanted to show you these gorgeous invites that arrived the other day...

We love it when our customers bring their own ideas to the table and thanks to Kate and Daniel, we've gotten to see our Damask range in a totally new light (or colour, as it were!). We think that the range looks absolutely stunning in hot pink and navy ink! What a gorgeous combo!

The perfect antidote for brightening up a grey wintery day

YIPPEEE! Our new website is finally here! : )

SO EXCITED!!!!!! We can barely contain ourselves!!!

After months of hard graft, we're proud to announce the launch of our new look website! YAY!!

The Mooks website was our first attempt at web-design and - whilst we've been designing for print for more years than we care to remember (!) - web design is a little bit more tricky, especially for a newbie... to say the least!!

Since we created the first Mooks site, we've designed 6 or 7 websites for other small businesses and our web skills are a little more polished now than when we started. We've been thinking that we may need a little face-lift for the last 6 months or so, and began re-designing our site back in September. Finally, after hours staring at a computer screen (Caro has got square eyes now - looks most odd!) we've finished!! All of the links work (hopefully) and it should be much easier to add lots of lovely new ranges!

We'd better get designing!!!

PS -

Your votes really do count! Thanking you in advance,

The small and dedicated team at Mooks xxx

Busy, busy, busy...

Wow - it's been such a long time since we posted on our blog.... and feeling everso slightly guilty that we've not managed to keep it up to date...* blush*. Having said that, things really have been so incredibly manic recently that there just don't seem to be enough hours, doing our day to day stuff, without managing to type a running commentary as well : )

We Mooks have been rushed off our feet, what with the summer wedding season in full swing, we've also moved house and business premises - from Marlow to the East Midlands - PLUS we've also just exhibited, for the first time, at the National Wedding Show at the NEC... PHEW!

As it was our first show, it took an awful lot of planning and worrying, but we're really happy to confirm that it went amazingly well and the feedback from our clients has been absolutely fantastic!

As well as meeting past and potential customers, it was also a great opportunity to meet our friends from Wedding Ideas and Perfect Wedding magazines! So lovely to meet the girls that we regularly speak to, and finally put faces to names etc!

Also a really good opportunity to meet other wedding suppliers and fellow stationers within the industry! Such lovely camaraderie between everyone, that they made the 3 days (plus the set-up day) pass really quickly!

One business that we think our brides will love is 'Your Wonderwall'. Lovely Allie, who runs the company, kept us amused (and sane) over the weekend! They had also just done the London leg of the show, the week before, so the fact that she was so full of energy and humour was pretty impressive!

A 'wonderwall' is a beautifully personalised montage of your favourite photos, telling a story of a special someone or occasion.

In short, they will take the pictures trapped on your PC, in albums and boxes, and then turn them into a large showpiece for your home.

Just give them your photos- either professional or amateur - and their design team turn them into contemporary wall art. All are available in a choice of stunning glass frames or on canvas.

We were really impressed by the concept, but also by the frames that they are supplied in! The vintage style frames would be absolutely perfect for our wedding seating plans! The frames come in lots of different finishes, but our favourites, by far, are the black or ivory classic frames... they'd look stunning with one of our Rambling Rose or Damask wedding table plans in!

We're taking a breather for a couple of weeks then gearing up for all of the Christmas weddings that are coming up, but we shall definitely be exhibiting at next years shows... it may take another 6 months to recover from this last one, but hopefully by next Autumn, we'll be all set to do it again!

Hopefully speak to you soon (we'll try to make it a little sooner than last time...!) X
